Aromatherapy & Essential Oils Safety in Pregnancy and Birth
Using aromatherapy safely in pregnancy
Aromatherapy is a complementary therapy that uses highly concentrated essential oils extracted from the seeds, leaves and bark of plants and flowers for their therapeutic benefits. Essential oils are powerful but only certain oils are safe to use and are used at a specific dilution during pregnancy and during birth.
There are are a range of pregnancy related conditions that aromatherapy is very beneficial for from alleviating stress and sleep disorders to muscular aches and pain, cystitis and swelling. Aromatherapy is wonderful for labour! From alleviating anxiety and nausea, to easing muscular aches and pains. Certain oils help strengthen uterine contractions and may help avoid intervention if your labour slows. A study by Ethel Burns and colleagues of over 8000 women using aromatherapy during labour in a busy UK teaching hospital can be found by clicking the link. There are also an array of benefits postnatally such as alleviating discomfort from tears to emotional well being in the new mother.
If you are interested in using aromatherapy, then it is recommended that you see a qualified aromatherapist for pregnancy, both for the safety and quality of essential oils used. Or you can download the pdf for more information on using aromatherapy in pregnancy and birth.
