The CUB birth support- a fabulous support for pregnancy and birth
There are lots of fabulous birth products out there. As a midwife and trained massage therapist, I've found the CUB to be a great support for massage in pregnancy and birth and the ease of transport from home to birth centre.

CUB = Comfortable Upright Birth
|
My first (and perhaps only!) live FaceBook event discussing the many benefits of being upright in birth. Click here if you are curious about the benefits or if you want to see my calm breathing in practice! |
Top reasons to purchase a CUB
1. Preparing for your birth. Use your CUB to help your baby get into an Optimal Fetal Position, a good position for birth. Sitting on the CUB with your knees lower than your hips and leaning slighting forward, opens the pelvis and encourages your baby to settle into the hammock of your tummy.
2. Easing backache. You can rock, sway, circle your hips unencumbered whilst feeling supported. If you have SPD then rotaing and exercising on the CUB is recommended by physiotherapists in Ireland.
3. A back massage! I would buy it for this alone. Leaning forward and nestling your baby in the U design is perfect for a back/neck/shoulder massage where you can relax deeply. TOP TIP - place some rolled up towels under your ankles to avoid getting pins and needles in your feet.
4. If you are doing a Hypnobirthing class or meditate then its a great place to support you as you practice your relaxation techniques.
5. You may find sitting on the CUB or putting one foot on the CUB an easier position to undertake perineal massage.
6. Whilst your labour starts and you are relaxing in bath, your partner can sit beside you on the CUB. Or if your shower is big enough, then take the CUB in with you. Sit and allow the warm water to gently relax you. Or place a towel on the base and lean over the CUB and direct the shower head over your lower back... Bliss!
7. If you are planning to Birth in a Maternity Unit then take your CUB with you. You can be upright, be monitored, and go into a multitude of positions that will help you have a more comfortable birth. You can even use it in a bed to help you be supported in positions that help labour progress. Or if you are going into the pool, then your partner can use the CUB to sit next to you.
8. Deflate one chamber for the birth itself. Its easy to apply warm compresses on the perineum which reduces the incidence of episiotomy and severe tearing. Or place a bowl underneath as your birth support trickles warm water over your perineum, it feels so soothing and help relax those muscles as your breathe your baby to birth.
9. After birth, perhaps you can donate to other pregnant mums or sell on to a Doula or birth worker for their classes.
