What causes labour to start?

A term baby is a baby born between 37 and 42 weeks of pregnancy. So if you are passed your 'guess date', its worth noting that you are simply passed your given estimated date of 40 weeks but you are not considered to be 'overdue' until your pregnancy reaches 42 weeks and over.

Research has now only recently discovered that it is the baby that initiates labour to start. Once the babies lungs are fully mature and they are able to tolerate the transition from having amniotic fluid filled lungs to air breathing at birth, they release a specific protein. Its this unique substance which stimulates the necessary chemical and hormonal changes in the mother for labour to start. So unless medically indicated, let’s not rush them, lets trust them.

Post dates medical induction

Post dates induction of labour is usually recommended around 41 + 5 days. Many women naturally get very anxious at the thought of their labour being induced. Having your labour medically started is different from labour starting naturally. Whilst there are many positive induction birth stories, for some it may be more challenging. A recent study concluded inducing labour in a healthy first time mum doubled her risk of an emergency Caesarean Section so many mothers are keen to avoid if both mum and baby are well. Sarah Wickham has some additional resources and information on post dates pregnancy.

It's important that you get all the information about the benefits and risks of what inducing your labour versus waiting for labour to start spontaneously involves.
Sarah Wickham brand new book is recommended to help you make informed decisions about inducing your labour. And fabulous Birth blogger Rachel Reed has just released a new book on 'Why Induction Matters'.
